Looking at this tender moment between mother and calf it’s hard to imagine that humpback whales were hunted to near extinction for their meat and oil. Humpback whales were added to the endangered species list in 1972 having been decimated by overfishing. Following the introduction of commercial whaling bans, their populations are increasing, but there’s more to be done to protect their habitat for future generations.
